The Sacramento Kings have added another player to their roster for the 2011-12 season. Sacramento won the opportunity to sign forward Travis Outlaw with the highest bid for the amnestied player. Outlaw was waived using the amnesty waiver by the New Jersey Nets.
Outlaw was signed by New Jersey to a five year $35 million contract
last offseason. The addition of Outlaw gives Sacramento another veteran
small forward who should see minutes and contribute immediately.
Last season Outlaw played in all 82 games
and averaged 9.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. His play was
disappointing in relation to the large contract he signed. This led New
Jersey to use their amnesty waiver on him.
Outlaw was injured in the offseason.
He broke is wrist while working out boxing and will not be ready to
start the season. He has been cleared for contact and should be ready to
play soon.
Sacramento signed Outlaw to a four year, $12 million contract. This
deal makes sense in many ways for Sacramento. Outlaw is a good, athletic
player who plays a position of need. This also opens up the possibility
for the team to use their own amnesty waiver on either Francisco Garcia or John Salmons
in the future. Having the ability to use the amnesty waiver in future
seasons could prove to be beneficial for the Kings. This signing also
puts Sacramento above the minimum salary floor for the upcoming season.
It's nice that the team saw a
player that would fit a need and didn't hesitate to place a bid on him.
As a fan of the team, I think Outlaw certainly helps them for the
upcoming season. After losing out on signing Jamal Crawford
this week, Sacramento was still in the market to sign a veteran player
and jumped at the opportunity. Outlaw is not an elite player by any
means, but is a solid veteran and Sacramento will benefit from his
presence off the bench.
