Long Island Beach Remains Identified as Shannan Gilbert

Posted by Raziq Ahmed on 18 Dec 201117 Dec 2011

Skeletal remains found in an impassable tangle of swamp and thick brush on a Long Island, N.Y., barrier beach have been identified as Shannan Gilbert, the woman whose disappearance led to the discovery of what police say is a serial killer's burial ground.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office identified the remains today, and though the cause of death is still undetermined, police have said they believed it was accidental.
The body was found last week about a quarter of a mile from where the 24-year-old Gilbert's purse, identification and shoes were located last week, near Oak Beach.

"[The homicide squad] were on an amphibious machine edging forward into thick brush when the homicide squad detective spotted the skeletal remains lying on the surface of the ground," "Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said after the remains were found.

Oak Beach is on a barrier island along the South Shore of Long Island, separating the Atlantic Ocean from South Oyster Bay. In the summer the ocean beaches are crowded, but in winter the beaches are largely deserted.

Dormer called the area where the body was found a "very tough, desolate, tangled mess."
He said that Gilbert could have likely been able to see the lights on a nearby parkway and attempted to go in that direction, but that she did not get very far in the marshy, tough ramble.

"If it is Shannan Gilbert, then her location is indicative of her trying to make it to the causeway, which is northeast of where her remains were found," Dormer said.
"There's no way Shannan Gilbert could have gotten through that brush to make it to the parkway," Dormer said. "If somebody is disoriented and anxious and running, it certainly would take a toll on you."

Gilbert, 24, was last seen in May 2010 apparently running from someone near today's search area. On the night of her disappearance, witnesses told police Gilbert did not appear to be acting rationally.
"It appeared at first when they searched that there's no way anyone could get in there," Dormer said. "We went in with the idea that we were going to do this one last time to see if we can find anything and we did."
"It is certainly a sad day for the Gilbert family and our condolences go out to that family on the death of their daughter," Dormer said.

The search for Gilbert led to the discovery of 10 sets of dismembered bodies that are believed to have been the victims of a serial killer, but Gilbert's death is not believed to be linked to the other 10 deaths.
Detectives believe a single killer is responsible for the dismembered bodies of young women, a male transvestite and a toddler found dumped along a pristine stretch of Long Island's south shore from 1996 to 2010.

Police believe that all 10 of the victims were linked to the sex trade, with DNA indicating that the toddler was the likely daughter of one of the victims.
It was the search for Craigslist escort Gilbert that yielded the grisly discoveries. Gilbert disappeared the previous May after meeting a client in nearby Oak Beach.
"Our theory is that this is a coincidence. She went missing in Oak Beach and this has nothing to do with the serial killer," Dormer has said.

Rapper Slim Dunkin Fatally Shot In Atlanta Music Studio

Posted by Raziq Ahmed on 18 Dec 201117 Dec 2011

Atlanta police say the rapper Slim Dunkin was gunned down Friday evening in a city music studio as he was preparing to record a video.
Police Maj. Keith Meadows said the rapper, whose real name is Mario Hamilton, was fatally shot in the chest after getting into an argument with another individual.

He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Meadows told The Associated Press late Friday that police have not been able to identify the shooter. He said investigators have been interviewing those who were inside the studio. He said as many as 20 people were inside the small office-type building at the time of the shooting, which took place around 5:30 p.m., but they were in different places.

Police have not recovered the handgun that was used. Investigators remained at the scene late Friday evening.
"Right now we're just trying to....identify who may have seen what, really just trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together," Meadows said. "It seems everybody witnessed something very different. We're just trying to go back and make sense of everything."

Slim Dunkin had appeared on a number of songs with the rapper Waka Flocka Flame. The website Mtv.com reported that the Brick Squad Monopoly rapper was on a solo track and had recently released a 20-track mix tape that featured Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy.
"It appears the victim was scheduled to do a photo shoot," Meadows said of Friday's events. "Before the video shoot took place, it appears the victim and suspect got involved in a verbal altercation. We don't know what that altercation was about."

"The suspect produced a weapon, discharged that handgun one time, striking the victim in the chest," Meadows said.
Meadows said the victim was in his early 20s and resided in the Atlanta area. Many fans were posting messages late Friday night on a Facebook page for the rapper. The website AllHipHop.com last February described Slim Dunkin, a Detroit native, as an up-and-coming talent with "a unique lyrical ability and style all his own."
In an interview with the website, he described himself as someone "trying to provide for his family by making something out of nothing just trying to beat the odds." "I don't have amazing lyrical ability I just know how to speak on what I been through and where I came from," he said.
Asked what to expect from him in 2011, he responded: "Music, music, music!"

Autopsy Rules Hazing Trauma Killed FAMU Drum Major

Posted by Raziq Ahmed on 18 Dec 201117 Dec 2011

Florida A&M University drum major Robert Champion died as a result of blunt-force trauma suffered in a hazing attack, according to the results of an autopsy ruling the death a homicide.
On Friday, the Orange-Osceola medical examiner’s office said an autopsy "revealed extensive contusions of his chest, arms, shoulder, and back with extensive hemorrhage."

Though there were no broken bones or damage to 26-year-old Champion’s internal organs, the autopsy found evidence of "a significant rapid blood loss" due to the injuries he suffered.
In a statement, the medical examiner called the death "the result of hemorrhagic shock due to soft tissue hemorrhage, incurred by blunt force trauma sustained during a hazing incident."

After the results were revealed Friday, sheriff’s investigators said they will meet with the state attorney’s office soon to determine what, if any, criminal charges will be filed.
Champion collapsed on a bus Nov. 19 after the annual Florida Classic football game between Florida A&M University and Bethune-Cookman University.

Authorities have said Champion died after an apparent hazing ritual aboard the parked band bus. Investigators say they have interviewed more than 30 witnesses in the case.
Champion’s mother, Pamela, reached at her Georgia home late Friday, said she’s "still trying to come to terms and absorb" the information contained in the report.

The drum major’s death has sparked a national outcry over hazing, launched multiple investigations and has prompted FAMU to place longtime band director Julian White on administrative leave.
The FAMU board of trustees will hold a telephone meeting Monday to discuss President James Ammons’ status, after Gov. Rick Scott recommended his suspension. Scott met with Ammons at the Capitol late Friday.

"Gov. Scott’s looking out for the best interest of the university, and still strongly feels that Dr. Ammons should step aside until the investigations are completed," Scott’s deputy press secretary, Jackie Schutz, wrote in an email to the Orlando Sentinel. "The medical examiner’s findings speak for itself."
Meanwhile, a joint statement issued by Dr. Solomon L. Badger III, chair of the FAMU board, and Ammons, called the autopsy information "extremely upsetting for all of us, even though it confirmed what we suspected."

"We again convey our deepest condolences to the Champion family. We will continue to cooperate with all agencies looking into the matter and are committed to creating a safe environment for the entire FAMU community and ensuring that this never happens again at FAMU."
Orange-Osceola medical-examiner officials said the autopsy found no evidence of a natural cause for Champion’s death, including disease, sickle-cell trait, drugs or alcohol.

"Immediately after the hazing incident, he complained of thirst and fatigue; minutes later, he noted loss of vision" and soon suffered cardiac arrest, the medical examiner said.
